During my kindergarten years, I live in a terror of white and black lady having long black silky hair and charming face with a shed of blood on their forehead. Although I haven’t seen any of them in real life, it lived in my wild and horrifying dreams and imaginations. Well, we all know for a fact that children are known for their mystical and creative imaginations and illusions, as for me, it’s more like hallucination. I used to watched horror movies back then with my playmates. But after that they can no longer see my anywhere. I would most probably in a catatonic state with all the horrifying scenes went flashing before my eyes again. Sort of a replay.
What I’m most scared of is this Philippine mythological creature called “Manananggal”. A witch-like person, usually a woman, with wild eyes, horrid laughs, with a very long elastic tongue and a bad hair day. She normally flies in the dark searching for victims and sucks blood and other internal organs of a man, usually a pregnant woman. Her favorite delicacies are children and babies. One distinct characteristic of this monster is that her upper torso can be detached from the lower part of her body enabling her to fly easily with her wings especially during full moon. Awooo!...
Today, I no longer live in fear though I’m not totally satisfied that this creatures doesn’t really exist. In fact, they do. And they can be seen everywhere. Only we can’t distinguish them that easy because they most probably evolved into a human form nowadays. They don’t eat humans anymore or take other people’s innards that they’ve suddenly develop a taste for Starbuck’s and Dunkin Donuts. Some are even vegetarians. They eat, talk and dress like any ordinary people, lurking around, mimicking every human’s action so they can mingle freely with others.
They often dress in a suit and tie or signature garments driving around with their Mercedes Benz, BMW and Ford in the Congress, Senate and even in Malacanang Palace. Some also like to pretend that they live a simpler life enabling themselves to socialize generously in the office, schools, meetings, and right in your own neighborhood.
“Manananggals” in our present time are modernized, with an elegant classy look and style, so they don’t just fly on top of your roof and take away something he/she wants. They will simply knock at your front door and talk. Often times, in front of the television, newspaper, billboards, on the internet. They are characterized as greedy, selfish, envious, double-faced, arrogant, and who’s only concern are their own desires, needs and interests.
They no longer steal vital organs, but often times the hopes and dreams of poor people, real people. Sometimes they even take away dignity and respect, take offenses and conceal truths. I don't want to elaborate that further. I'm no activist nor communist.
Salt works equally well against “manananggals” in the old times. It prevents itself from rejoining its other half of her body. A sprinkle of salt in her other half part will surely melt her away. At present time, these creatures uses salt for their own food, it’ll be useless to eliminate them with a sprinkle of it. How about bury them in a dozen sack of salt? Eh?
